Will 4-up stay readable?

It depends on the original type size. Body text from a report usually survives 2-up. Dense 8-point tables often do not survive 4-up.

Does N-up change page size?

Output sheets use a standard page box with the originals scaled into cells. Inspect the result if a printer is picky about page size.

N-up is for sheets (print). Single Page is one continuous vertical page (scroll or some plotters).
