Can Kiap recover the password later?

No. If you lose the password, Decrypt cannot guess it. Keep a copy of the unencrypted original in a vault if you might need it.

Is this the same as redaction?

No. Encryption hides the whole file behind a password. Redaction permanently removes specific text. Use both when a public-ish copy must also have secrets gone.

Does encryption shrink or grow the file?

Size change is small. Compress before encrypt if you also need a smaller attachment.
